    Accommodation or confrontation? Some responses to the Eiselen commission report and the Bantu education act with special reference to the Methodist church of South Africa

    This study was undertaken at a time when South African politicians and educators are facing the challenge of a major restructuring of the education system, and at a time when the the Methodist Church of South Africa is being encouraged, by some, to become more involved in the provision of education again. It focusses on the three events - the appointment of the 'Commission of Inquiry into Native Education' (usually referred to as the Eiselen Commission), the Report of that Commission, and the Bantu Education Act of 1954 which led to the introduction of the system of Bantu Education in 1955. Consideration is given to the responses of various 'liberal' and 'radical' groups to those events

    Our Space: Being a Responsible Citizen of the Digital World

    Our Space is a set of curricular materials designed to encourage high school students to reflect on the ethical dimensions of their participation in new media environments. Through role-playing activities and reflective exercises, students are asked to consider the ethical responsibilities of other people, and whether and how they behave ethically themselves online. These issues are raised in relation to five core themes that are highly relevant online: identity, privacy, authorship and ownership, credibility, and participation.Our Space was co-developed by The Good Play Project and Project New Media Literacies (established at MIT and now housed at University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism). The Our Space collaboration grew out of a shared interest in fostering ethical thinking and conduct among young people when exercising new media skills

    Multiple novel prostate cancer susceptibility signals identified by fine-mapping of known risk loci among Europeans

    Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous common prostate cancer (PrCa) susceptibility loci. We have fine-mapped 64 GWAS regions known at the conclusion of the iCOGS study using large-scale genotyping and imputation in 25 723 PrCa cases and 26 274 controls of European ancestry. We detected evidence for multiple independent signals at 16 regions, 12 of which contained additional newly identified significant associations. A single signal comprising a spectrum of correlated variation was observed at 39 regions; 35 of which are now described by a novel more significantly associated lead SNP, while the originally reported variant remained as the lead SNP only in 4 regions. We also confirmed two association signals in Europeans that had been previously reported only in East-Asian GWAS. Based on statistical evidence and linkage disequilibrium (LD) structure, we have curated and narrowed down the list of the most likely candidate causal variants for each region. Functional annotation using data from ENCODE filtered for PrCa cell lines and eQTL analysis demonstrated significant enrichment for overlap with bio-features within this set. By incorporating the novel risk variants identified here alongside the refined data for existing association signals, we estimate that these loci now explain ∼38.9% of the familial relative risk of PrCa, an 8.9% improvement over the previously reported GWAS tag SNPs. This suggests that a significant fraction of the heritability of PrCa may have been hidden during the discovery phase of GWAS, in particular due to the presence of multiple independent signals within the same regio

    Abstract Previous studies show that youth rely on personal interactions to assess the trustworthiness of others, including politicians with whom opportunities for interaction are unlikely. Absent such opportunities, some worry that youth will refrain from making trust judgments about politicians altogether and disengage from civic participation. In this study, we conducted dilemma interviews with adolescents and emerging adults (ages 15 -25) to investigate how they make trust judgments about distant political figures. We found that 1) a lack of interaction did not prevent these youth from making trust judgments, and 2) counter to earlier findings, they relied on appearance-based criteria as proxies for interaction. We discuss the need to educate youth to be critical consumers of information and media.

    A Hush Falls Over the Crowd? Diminished Online Civic Expression Among Young Civic Actors

    An earlier investigation of civically engaged youth's online civic expression, conducted by the authors, revealed that most youth expressed their off-line civic views in their online lives. But do youth change their online civic expression over time? If so, how and why? A follow-up study of the original participants about two years later provides a longitudinal perspective on online civic expression. Survey responses from 41 U.S.-based civic youth reveal that over 40% changed their expression patterns over the twoyear period, with most quieting or silencing expression. These changes correspond to a group-level shift: Withholding civic expression on social media is most common at the time of our follow-up study.     Understanding Earthquake Fault Systems Using QuakeSim Analysis and Data Assimilation Tools

    We are using the QuakeSim environment to model interacting fault systems. One goal of QuakeSim is to prepare for the large volumes of data that spaceborne missions such as DESDynI will produce. QuakeSim has the ability to ingest distributed heterogenous data in the form of InSAR, GPS, seismicity, and fault data into various earthquake modeling applications, automating the analysis when possible. Virtual California simulates interacting faults in California. We can compare output from long time history Virtual California runs with the current state of strain and the strain history in California. In addition to spaceborne data we will begin assimilating data from UAVSAR airborne flights over the San Francisco Bay Area, the Transverse Ranges, and the Salton Trough. Results of the models are important for understanding future earthquake risk and for providing decision support following earthquakes. Improved models require this sensor web of different data sources, and a modeling environment for understanding the combined data

    Clustering Analysis Methods for GNSS Observations: A Data-Driven Approach to Identifying California's Major Faults.

    We present a data-driven approach to clustering or grouping Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations according to observed velocities, displacements or other selected characteristics. Clustering GNSS stations provides useful scientific information, and is a necessary initial step in other analysis, such as detecting aseismic transient signals (Granat et al., 2013, https://doi.org/10.1785/0220130039). Desired features of the data can be selected for clustering, including some subset of displacement or velocity components, uncertainty estimates, station location, and other relevant information. Based on those selections, the clustering procedure autonomously groups the GNSS stations according to a selected clustering method. We have implemented this approach as a Python application, allowing us to draw upon the full range of open source clustering methods available in Python's scikit-learn package (Pedregosa et al., 2011, https://doi.org/10.5555/1953048.2078195). The application returns the stations labeled by group as a table and color coded KML file and is designed to work with the GNSS information available from GeoGateway (Donnellan et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1007/s12145-020-00561-7; Heflin et al., 2020, https://doi.org/10.1029/2019ea000644) but is easily extensible. We demonstrate the methodology on California and western Nevada. The results show partitions that follow faults or geologic boundaries, including for recent large earthquakes and post-seismic motion. The San Andreas fault system is most prominent, reflecting Pacific-North American plate boundary motion. Deformation reflected as class boundaries is distributed north and south of the central California creeping section. For most models a cluster boundary connects the southernmost San Andreas fault with the Eastern California Shear Zone (ECSZ) rather than continuing through the San Gorgonio Pass

    Pathological and regulatory effects of anti-myelin antibodies in experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in mice

    Neurological deficit in experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) and multiple sclerosis (MS) is probably a consequence of synergy between T and B cell responses to CNS antigens. During the demyelinating phase of chronic relapsing EAE in ABH mice, anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) responses were increased compared to the inflammatory acute phase, but such levels did not correlate with the severity of clinical disease. The pathogenicity of antibodies (Ab) to MOG, myelin basic protein (MBP), proteolipid protein (PLP) and galactocerebroside (GalC) was investigated in vivo following injection at the onset of EAE. An IgG2a monoclonal Ab (mAb), clone Z12, directed to MOG augmented clinical disease and demyelination in ABH and C57BL/6 mice, but not MOG knock-out mice. No effect was observed with F(ab(2))' fragments of Z12 or with the anti-MOG IgG1 mAbs, clones Y10 or 8-18C5. Cobra venom factor partially reduced the augmenting effect of mAb Z12 suggesting a role for complement. The pathogenic effect of anti-myelin Abs was not restricted to MOG since an anti-GalC mAb exacerbated inflammation in the CNS while an MBP mAb (clone 22) reduced clinical disease. Taken together, these data provide further evidence that myelin-reactive Abs generated during autoimmune neurological disease may play an important role not only in the pathogenesis of disease but also the regulation of myelin-targeted autoimmune disease
